Why a Progressive/Sequential Class Structure?
A sequential/progressive class structure provides a greatly accelerated and more fertile learning environment for both the student and instructor. Instead of “starting from scratch” as is often the case in the drop-in class model, each session builds and expands on what has been covered in proceeding lessons. Perhaps the most valuable asset of a sequential/progressive approach is that it allows a relationship to form between teacher and student. This is the foundation of an authentic yoga practice and gives the dedicated student the in depth and individual attention they deserve.
After a brief winter hiatus I am excited and pleased to be offering two progressive Power Yoga Therapy courses for spring 2008!
I am calling this round of classes “Integrated Alignment”.
The focus will be to explain and explore the transformative and beneficial practice of yoga, with special attention to the principles of “whole body” alignment.
In other words, rather than looking at the different areas of the body in isolation, we will be working with the body in its entirety. Our aim will be to experience the body as one biomechanically and energetically balanced system.
Drawing from many different traditions and disciplines (Ashtanga Vinyasa, Iyengar, Vijnana, Yin Yoga, Anusara, Myofascial Meridians, Tensegrity, Muscle Balance Function, P.N.F.), and with an emphasis on anatomical education, these courses are designed to provide students with new perspectives and a deeper understanding of Yoga and its effects on the body.
Each class will begin with a brief discussion on theory and anatomy followed by in depth physical application of these concepts to our practice. A workout for both the body and the mind!
Subjects covered include:
- Breath/Pranayama
- Preparatory exercises
- Sun Salutations
- Standing Postures
- Hip Openers
- Backbends
- Inversions
- Meditation
The courses will run for eight weeks with a bonus “make up/review class” in the ninth week.
The two courses are as follows:
